Latin America and the Caribbean has one of the highest growth rates of CO2 emissions from transport among all regions, with emissions increasing by 50% between 2000 and 2016, stemming from increased passenger and freight transport activities. The global pandemic caused by COVID-19 has further increased the challenges in moving the region's decarbonization agenda forward. However, this crisis also presents a great opportunity to innovate and improve the quality of transport activities to prevent the post-COVID-19 economic recovery from reorienting transport activities back towards the most polluting and energy-intensive modes.
In this session we will listen to an introductory presentation on the regional context in implementing and updating resilient and low-emission mobility and transportation. Then we will move on to a group work to reflect on how the situation imposed by COVID-19 affects this sector (opportunities and challenges)? what experiences, good practices and useful lessons learned do we have and can we share? what do we identify that we still need to do (needs)?
