About the webinar

Biomass in its different forms has the potential to become an important source of clean energy in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, in many countries of the region the widespread use of biomass obtained in an unsustainable way using inefficient technologies is an indicator of energy poverty, while in others the abundant residues from forestry and agricultural activities with energy potential are wasted and become an environmental problem.

As with other renewable energy sources, harnessing biomass for energy purposes to its full potential requires a clear and consistent public policy framework and a flow of resources for investment. In this case, however, the formulation of appropriate policies goes beyond the energy authorities, as a high degree of coordination and coherence is required between the entities in charge of energy, environmental, forestry and agricultural policies.

This webinar provided an overview of the opportunities and challenges for harnessing biomass for energy in the region and will present as a case study the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) proposal of Probiomasa in Argentina, as an example of measures that can contribute to overcoming barriers to the long-term development of the bioenergy sector.

The webinar was conducted in Spanish. If you have any questions about this event, please contact the LEDS LAC Platform Secretariat: info@ledslac.org.
