- Open discussion with participants in the session
About the presentation
In 2011, the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) developed the most widely recognized and agreed set of indicators for the assessment and monitoring of bioenergy sustainability: The GBEP Sustainability Indicators for Bioenergy (GSI). Since then, they have been implemented in 14 countries. In 2016-2018, FAO measured the indicators in Paraguay to assess the sustainability of forest biomass for energy, and ethanol from corn and sugarcane.
Constance Miller and Tiziana Pirelli, experts from the GBEP team at FAO, will introduce the GSI and their relevance for data collection and policy development at the national level, and will then focus on the results of the implementation of the indicators in Paraguay to give examples of the recommendations for the sustainable development of bioenergy that fed from this measurement.
About the presenters
Ms Constance Miller, GBEP Secretariat, FAO
Constance Miller has been working with the GBEP Secretariat since 2016, coordinating the technical groups of the Partnership and contributing to its various activities and projects. She is currently supporting local experts in the measurement of the GBEP sustainability indicators in the biodiesel value chain at national scale in Paraguay. She has a background in natural sciences and holds an MSc in Sustainable Development from SOAS, University of London.
Dr. Tiziana Pirelli, FAO
Dr. Tiziana Pirelli holds a PhD in Agricultural Science and Technology from the University of Udine (Italy) where she worked as a researcher on climate smart agriculture and on Integrated Food and Energy Systems with a focus on conservation agriculture and biochar from 2010 to 2016. In September 2016 she moved to FAO as part of the Global Bioenergy Partnership team. Since 2014, she has implemented, as lead technical expert, various cooperation projects on sustainable land management practices and bioenergy, with activities in more than 20 countries across Europe, Africa, South America and South-East Asia. She has been working with GBEP on positive linkages between modern bioenergy and Forest Landscape Restoration since September 2018, with a focus on SSA countries. She is currently supporting local experts in the measurement of the GBEP sustainability indicators in the biodiesel value chain at national scale in Paraguay.
The presentation will be in English, with simultaneous translation into Spanish. Participants will be able to ask questions and comments in either of the two languages. If you need additional information, please contact Katherine Bocanegra kbocanegra@libelula.org.pe.
