Agenda
Introduction. Eduardo José Sánchez Sierra. Secretariat Coordinator, LEDS LAC Platform.
The role of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and how it fits into the full range of climate change response options. Thelma Krug. Vice-Chair, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Presentation of Carbon Dioxide Removal approaches and governance considerations. Natalia Rubiano. PhD Candidate in Sustainability Sciences, University of Lund (Sweden).
About the webinar
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C indicates that large-scale carbon dioxide removal must be part of the international strategy to keep temperature rise well below 2°C and achieve net zero emissions targets by 2050. In that sense, the trajectories proposed in the Special Report involve a combination of biological and technological approaches to large-scale Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). While the use of EDC has been incorporated into the IPCC trajectories, the Report emphasizes that all of these approaches still involve uncertainties with respect to feasibility and sustainability and represent significant governance challenges.
The webinar will provide an overview of the main IPCC findings regarding large-scale EDC techniques and present the scopes of different EDC techniques, both biological and technological approaches. It will also give participants an overview of the potential benefits and risks that these techniques could pose to biodiversity, air, groundwater, soil quality and food sovereignty, and address the governance challenges associated with the large-scale deployment of these techniques.
The webinar will be conducted in Spanish with simultaneous translation into English. If you have any questions about this event, please contact the LEDS LAC Platform Secretariat: [email protected].
About the panelists
Senior Researcher at the National Institute for Space Research of Brazil, and one of the three IPCC vice-chairs since 2015. For more than 15 years she represented Brazil in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations, particularly on issues related to land use, land use change and forestry (USCUSS), research and systematic observation and reporting guidelines. He has several publications related to climate change and forests and has participated in the development of innovative methodologies for afforestation/reforestation under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
Natalia Rubiano has worked on issues related to development and sustainability throughout her career, mainly with the United Nations Development Program. She was part of the C2G team as Outreach Officer and is currently a PhD candidate at Lund University (Sweden). Her research project focuses on the political, social and economic implications of negative emission technologies.
