Under the slogan "Coordinating and Empowering Regional Action towards COP30".this year, the Regional LEDS LAC Workshop will be held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, from 30 September to 2 OctoberThe objective is to be a meeting and articulation space to accelerate climate action in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).
This year, the theme will focus on capacity building and collaboration focused on the process of updating Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), increasing ambition and linking to Long Term Strategies (LTS), in light of the UAE Consensus and Global Stocktaking (GST).
The Workshop will bring together more than 120 participants from the region, including representatives from national and subnational governments, the private sector, academia, civil society, international organizations, cooperation agencies, among others. Participants will be able to exchange experiences, generate peer-to-peer learning, and identify concrete opportunities for regional collaboration and synergies in the road to COP30 through interactive sessions, panel discussions and hands-on workshops.
Prioritized issues towards COP30
The first day Capacity building to update and align the NDCs and LTS towards COP30, considering the results of the Global Stocktake and the priority of resilience in LAC. The integration of the climate and nature agendas will be addressed, as well as the improvement of monitoring systems to ensure transparent reporting and progress towards climate and biodiversity targets.
The second day will explore financing strategies needed for NDCs and LTS, focusing on the capacities of state and non-state actors. The mobilization of resources and investments to implement climate actions will be discussed, with a special emphasis on adaptation and nature conservation.
Finally, the last day will address governance and the multi-stakeholder articulation needed to implement climate commitments and actions. Emphasis will be placed on the involvement of various areas of government, especially the Ministries of Economy and Finance, and collaboration between the public and private sector to develop effective policies will be explored. In addition, the alignment of measurement and reporting frameworks to assess the progress of all stakeholders in the region will be discussed.
Collaboration and partnerships for climate action
The LEDS LAC Regional Workshop is organized in close collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB); the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); the Euroclima program through its implementing agencies (the German Cooperation Agency GIZ, the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Public Administration and Policy - FIIAPP and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean - ECLAC); Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT); and in partnership with Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), NDC Partnership and the UN Regional Collaboration Center on Climate Change (RCC Latam). It is also supported by the Global Methane Hub, NAP Global Network, High-Level Champions (Race to Zero) and the Partnership for Transparency in the Paris Agreement (PATPA).
An opportunity for Latin America and the Caribbean
The COP30 in Brazil represents a historic opportunity to position Latin America as a leader in the global fight against climate change. The LEDS LAC 2024 Regional Workshop will be an important milestone on this path, consolidating the actions and partnerships necessary for a just and sustainable transition in the region.
