Lima, October 11, 2023. The Bioenergy Community of Practice (BioE CoP) of the LEDS LAC Regional Platform announces the results of the evaluation of bioenergy project proposals under the Bioenergy Challenge Latin America and the Caribbean 2023 (hereinafter BioE LAC 2023 Challenge).

The Challenge has been organized in collaboration with the Private Financing Advisory Network (PFAN) and South Pole, with the support of CAF Development Bank of Latin America, the Secretariat of the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture - IICA, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the United States (NREL) and the Latin American Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development (CLACDS) of INCAE Business School.

The purpose of this initiative is to contribute to strengthening the capacities of organizations promoting bioenergy projects to structure business models that make investments financially viable, prepare bankable project proposals and approach potential sources of financing.

In response to a public call made in July, 33 applications were received from teams from 10 Latin American countries, of which 30 were selected to participate in a capacity-building process that included nine training sessions and access to advice on preparing project idea notes or project notes. Thirteen teams submitted these documents, which were evaluated by specialists from the partner institutions.

The teams that earned the highest scores and were selected as finalists are:

  • National University of Colombia - Colombia. Energy recovery of agricultural residues from a palm extraction plant.
  • TEREO SAC - Peru. Valorization of bovine residues for biogas and biofertilizer production at El Carmen Plant.
  • Asociación Ambientalista del Sur - Argentina. Bioenergy Transmutation - Development of a Triple Impact Circular Economy Project through the management of organic fractions of municipal solid waste (FORSU), for the generation of biogas and composting.

In addition, Special Mention was given to the following teams:

  • Technological Institute of Production - Peru. EcoFertile Coast: Design and development of a biogas and biofertilizer project using fishing industry waste.
  • TECSOL LTDA - Colombia. Energy recovery of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (FORSU) by anaerobic digestion for the production of biogas.
  • Kratospro/Ayala Consulting Consortium - Ecuador. Bioenergy generation from biogas from the Cayambe sanitary landfill.

These teams will receive support from PFAN to further strengthen their proposal and guide their search for financing. They will also receive training from INCAE Business School on best practices for effective presentations. In addition, they and other participants who so requested received from South Pole an estimate of the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the feasibility of potentially obtaining carbon credits.

At the end of October, each of the finalist projects will have the opportunity to present their proposals before a panel of specialists from financial and technical institutions, who will provide feedback and guidance on how to move forward in the search for funding.
