Latin American countries seek to strengthen implementation of their climate commitments under the Paris Agreement

More than 100 experts are meeting in Santiago de Chile to present experiences of coordination between sectors and levels of government to promote the implementation of NDCs in the region.

Santiago de Chile. Achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change - ratified in 2016 - requires a transformation of the economy towards sustainable, resilient and low-emission development. To achieve this, it is urgent to accelerate the process of implementing the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which represent the commitments made by countries to comply with the Agreement and address climate change.

Some countries have already started to develop roadmaps for the implementation of their NDCs. However, how can NDC implementation be strengthened in Latin America? What experiences and opportunities exist? What is the importance of articulation between sectors and levels of government? What is the role of the private sector? In what innovative ways can capacities be generated and the expected results achieved?

In order to answer these and other questions, more than 100 experts, representatives of national and subnational governments, cooperation agencies, the private sector, academia and organized civil society, mainly from Latin American countries, will meet in Santiago de Chile from August 1 to 3 for the "Regional Dialogue on sectoral and multilevel articulation to strengthen the implementation of NDCs in Latin America".

During the meeting, the experiences of the participating countries will be presented, emphasizing how the articulation at the level of sectors (energy, transportation) and territories (cities and municipalities) is contributing to implement the NDCs. Based on the experiences and contributions of the participants, needs and opportunities of the countries of the region will be identified to enhance and strengthen such implementation.

The inaugural session will be attended by relevant political and environmental personalities such as the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena; the Head of Business of the European Union Delegation in Chile, Ruth Bajada; CAF's Director of Environment and Climate Change, Ligia Castro; and the CEO of the Intermunicipal Consortium of the West Metropolitan Region of Sao Paulo (CIOESTE), Francisco Maciel; among others.

The event is jointly organized by the initiative "Peer-to-peer dialogue to enhance the implementation of NDCs in Latin America" (executed by the Avina Foundation and the German Cooperation Agency GIZ, in collaboration with ECLAC, in the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ program) and the Regional Platform for Latin America and the Caribbean for Low Emission and Resilient Development Strategies (LEDS LAC).

It is supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, as well as the Fundación Internacional y para Iberoamérica de Administración y Políticas Públicas (FIIAPP), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the U.S. Department of State, and the NDC Partnership.
