Resource management has a major impact on greenhouse gas emissions at every stage of the resource life cycle. There is therefore a great opportunity to collaborate with companies, governments and other stakeholders to understand the impact and potential reductions associated with managing their resources more efficiently.

Target

The objective of the working group is to provide a space for the exchange of knowledge and discussion of strategies to manage resources more efficiently, improve knowledge of the region, promote alliances, provide technical assistance, and gather local case studies for reference.

The "Resource Efficiency Working Group" is focused on the efficiency of material resources, since other types of resources have their own specialized working groups.

Resource Efficiency Working Group (REWG) members closed session

The objective of this session was to review the activities of the Transportation Working Group and the Resource Efficiency Working Group in 2023, and to promote active participation in the groups. In addition, the experience of "La Rolita", a leading example of mass transit in Bogota and its surroundings, recognized for its 100% electric fleet and its commitment to gender equality in driving roles, support for resilient and low emission strategies, was presented, presenting case studies and results from partners and countries around the world.

COP 28 UNFCCC side event "Achieving Climate Targets in the Transport Sector: Can Renewables Pave the Way'?"

This event explored how renewables and transportation can jointly address global climate goals. A panel of experts delved into the challenges and opportunities around systemic decarbonization of the transport sector and highlighted strategies to accelerate renewable energy deployment, as well as the benefits of circularity and life cycle optimization.

COP 28 Exhibit Area "High Impact Results in the globe".

This exhibition aimed to highlight progress towards Net Zero through active collaboration and support for resilient and low-emission strategies, presenting case studies and results from partners and countries around the world.

Parallel Session XI LEDS LAC Regional Workshop "Enhancing Sustainability in Transportation through Resource Efficiency".

In this session leading experts and participants explored the needs and opportunities in the transportation sector, highlighting the need to use resources efficiently. Although often underestimated, this perspective offers great potential for improving energy efficiency, rethinking infrastructure and technology, and achieving sustainability in transportation.

COP27 Euroclima+ Pavilion Participation "Potential of the circular economy to contribute to climate action: case studies of Latin American and Caribbean countries".

The purpose of this event was to exchange views on the progress made in the insertion of the circular economy in Latin American and Caribbean countries and the opportunities it offers to meet climate commitments while contributing to macroeconomic objectives related to GDP growth and job creation.

The purpose of this event was to exchange views on the progress made in the insertion of the circular economy in Latin American and Caribbean countries and the opportunities it offers to meet climate commitments while contributing to macroeconomic objectives related to GDP growth and job creation.

COP 27 Euroclima+ Pavilion "Opportunities of the Circular Economy in Sustainable Mobility".

This event highlighted challenges and experiences from the lens of circular models in transportation, exploring actions that can be taken by governments and the private sector, and highlighting the benefits of redesigning, extending the useful life and promoting the efficient use of raw materials and resources in the transportation transition.

Participation of the industry action event "Driving industry ambition and action to achieve net-zero performance by 2050 and build climate resilience" at COP 26.

The event, organized by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), was held in the framework of COP 26 in Glasglow, Scotland. It brought together a diverse set of stakeholders to highlight the critical actions needed by each actor to transform industry to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, building industry resilience to the impacts of climate change through a just transition. In addition, the role of the circular economy for an impactful and sustainable industrial transformation was highlighted. Representatives of key stakeholders provided messages and examples of commitments and actions to reduce emissions, drive innovation and accelerate the transition.

Organization and coordination of the Side Event "The role of the Circular Economy to achieve and increase the ambition of the NDCs" at COP25.

The event was held in the framework of the COP25 that took place in December 2019 in Madrid, Spain. It brought together representatives from different sectors who shared their experiences and discussed the importance of circular economy strategies to design and implement more efficient and low-emission production systems, with the aim of increasing the ambition of the NDCs' commitments. Panelists included representatives from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation; the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU); the Secretariat for Climate Change and Sustainable Development of Argentina, the German Cooperation Agency (GIZ), and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Open presentation at the Action Hub held at the Latin American and Caribbean Climate Week (LACCW)

An open session was held during Climate Week in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil in August. The objective of the session was to promote resource efficiency measures as a strategy to contribute to climate change mitigation and encourage sustainable consumption and production.

Collaborative knowledge product - Experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean

LedsLac
Asociación Sustentar, in its role as coordinator of the Resource Efficiency Working Group of the LEDS LAC Platform, developed a knowledge product in collaboration with members of the GTER. This document represents a comprehensive effort to understand and analyze sustainability and circular economy practices in various fields, both industrial and social. It aims to examine in depth cases of innovative projects that have successfully incorporated resource efficiency into their operations, thus highlighting their commitment to responsible environmental management.

The Re-ciclo project in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil, seeks to promote social inclusion, improve working conditions and optimize recycling in the city through the delivery of electric tricycles and adaptation workshops. The purpose of this technical assistance was to prepare a manual for facilitators working with urban waste pickers in the adaptation of the project and a video tutorial on the maintenance and repair of tricycles for waste pickers.

In 2021, Argentina published the Green Productive Development Plan, focused on 4 axes: promoting a national industry for the green economy; fostering the transition to a circular economy; promoting sustainable production for greater competitiveness; and promoting the sustainable industrialization of natural resources associated with the development of national suppliers, integrating local actors. To strengthen the plan, it is necessary to consolidate the contribution of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the national climate change strategy. This technical assistance sought to outline a "Pilot ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) measurement tool for SMEs" to measure and identify opportunities for improvement and promote sustainability strategies.

DERES, a private non-profit organization that promotes Corporate Social Responsibility in Uruguay, together with the Ministry of Environment, launched a call for projects to strengthen local value-added proposals that use waste and recovered materials with a circular economy perspective. The present technical assistance facilitated workshops on: Circular Economy, flow analysis, redesign and valorization, and provided recommendations to contribute to the consolidation of local initiatives in their circular practices.

The Municipality of Tunuyán, located south of the City of Mendoza in Argentina, is in charge of both residential and commercial waste collection, which is carried out every day of the week door-to-door, manually and mechanically. For this reason, the Municipality requested technical assistance in order to achieve a Municipal Plan for the Integral Management of Organic Waste through the development of a roadmap for its implementation, which allows identifying the most appropriate management alternatives according to the particularities of the locality.

The Technical Assistance provided to the Private Sector Studies Commission for Sustainable Development (CESPEDES) of Mexico, aimed to assess the degree of implementation of the Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency concept in the private sector in Mexico. This was possible thanks to the adaptation of the Circular Economy tool developed by the Argentine Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEADS). Recommendations were also generated to promote circularity and Resource Efficiency.

The municipality of Villa La Angostura (VLA), in the province of Neuquén, is one of the main tourist destinations in the Argentine Patagonia, located within the Nahuel Huapi National Park.

Within the framework of the Integrated Waste Management Law No. 19,829 passed in 2019, each municipality must develop its own local waste management plan. For this reason, technical support was provided to the Municipality of Salto in order to design a Roadmap composed of 7 associated programs, for the implementation of said law. More information on the context, challenges and programs associated with the roadmap can be found in the infographic and testimony.

Technical support was provided to the municipality of Villa la Angostura to propose improvements and generate alternatives for the management of organic waste generated in the municipality. A team of experts participated and carried out a diagnosis of the current situation, where the main difficulties and opportunities for improvement were identified, and then a roadmap structured in stages, for the progressive implementation of a comprehensive organic waste management plan.
