Costa Rica, January 17, 2020. The Community of Practice (CoP) on Engaging the Private Sector in Climate Policy Processes was launched in mid-2018, with the objective of contributing to the development and consolidation of mechanisms to articulate private sector participation in the formulation and implementation of climate policies, with particular emphasis on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), through the exchange of experiences and best practices, joint learning and collaboration to address common challenges.
The CoP is implemented jointly by EUROCLIMA+through Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, within the framework of the Climate Governance Component, the LEDS LAC Regional Platform and the Latin American Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development (CLACDS) of INCAE Business School.
The CoP involves national teams made up of representatives of government institutions and private sector organizations that are carrying out initiatives relevant to this issue in EUROCLIMA+ partner countries. During its first year of work, the CoP organized a series of activities designed to facilitate exchange, learning and collaboration among CoP members, including two face-to-face workshops, six online exchange sessions, two webinars and the documentation of three case studies.
Participants in the CoP have positively evaluated the first year's activities. Carlos Adrianzén, representative of the company CELEPSA, from Peru, said that being part of the COP "has been very enriching, as I have found common ground on solutions and strategies". Lorena Márquez, from the Climate Change Division of the Ministry of Housing, Land Management and Environment of Uruguay, said: "It has given me the impetus and enabled me to replicate a similar space in my context". Other testimonials can be found in the brochure of the CoP
For the second year of work, a new series of exchange and training activities is planned, as well as the development of knowledge products to disseminate the lessons learned from the Community of Practice to a wider audience. On this occasion, teams from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay are participating in the Community.
These activities kicked off on November 29, 2019 with an online sharing session, in which the objectives and work plan were presented, as well as details on the process of developing a mapping and good practice guide on engaging the private sector in NDC implementation and review processes. In addition, a side event was organized within the framework of COP25 in Madrid, to share the lessons learned from the first year of the Community,
Five online exchange sessions, a face-to-face workshop, support for the formulation of private or public-private investment projects associated with NDCs, the organization of webinars open to the public, as well as the publication of the mapping, the best practices guide and other documents developed from the work of the Community are scheduled for 2020.
