La Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales de México (SEMARNAT), el Instituto Nacional de Ecología y Cambio Climático (INECC) y la Plataforma Regional LEDS LAC organizan el VI Taller Regional de LEDS LAC, que se llevará a cabo en la Ciudad de México, del 16 al 18  de octubre de 2017, en el marco de la Segunda Semana del Clima de Latinoamérica y el Caribe.

The Mexican Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC) and the LEDS LAC Regional Platform are pleased to invite you to the VI LEDS LAC REGIONAL WORKSHOP, which will take place in Mexico City from October 16 to 18, 2017, in the framework of the Second Latin American and Caribbean Climate Week.

The workshop is co-organized with CAF – Development Bank of Latin America, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and NDC Partnership. It is sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Center, the Climate Change Management Support Project and Avina Foundation, among others.

La sixth edition of the Regional Workshop will focus on “Governance for a resilient and low emission development: linking actors, sectors and government level” to advance in the implementation of the NDCs. It is co-organized with CAF – Development Bank of Latin America, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and NDC Partnership. The workshop is sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Center, the Climate Change Management Support Project, the Avina Foundation, the US Department of State through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the horizontal component of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme from the European Union, implemented by the International Foundation for Administration and Public Policies of the Spanish Cooperation (FIAPP) and the German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ).

The agenda is designed to maximize the interaction among participants, who will have the opportunity to:

  • Know the results of recent studies, planning tools and case studies of the participating countries.
  • Express their opinions and share their experiences in plenary and group discussions.
  • Participate in training sessions organized by LEDS LAC’s partner organizations.
  • Share the results of their projects with colleagues from across the region in the marketplace.
  • Extend their network of contacts and identify opportunities for collaboration.

Immediately after the VI LEDS LAC Workshop, the Latin American Carbon Forum 2017 will be held.

What is the marketplace?

Like every year, we will have the Marketplace at the workshop, a space where participants will be able to share information about their organizations, initiatives and projects with the rest of participants. It is an opportunity for all the institutions to get to know each other and share who they are and what they are working on.

Date and schedule: Monday, October 16th, from 12:00 to 13:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

¿How does it work?

Those registered in the Marketplace should bring a banner (roll-screen) that will be located to create a market style space where they can discuss and share information with other participants. We invite you to bring brochures and other publications about your organization, initiative or project. The printing of the banner and other materials will be in charge of each institution.

Training Sessions

The training sessions will be held on Tuesday 17th from 10:30 t0 13:00, offered by different institutions specialized in the subject, as detailed below:

  • LEDS stakeholder engagement – concepts, practices and tools / Center for Climate Strategies.
  • Creating capacity to develop business models for electric bus schemes / WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities (Transport WG).
  • How to assess transformational change potential of climate change actions and measures? / UNEP DTU Partnership.
  • Deep dive on mitigation MRV: harmonizing project-level mitigation activities with national inventories for effective NDC tracking / USAID & ICF RALI.

The quota for each session is limited. The registration lists will be available to participants on the first day of the workshop.

Open Space

Do you have any LEDS related topic that you do not see in the agenda and would like to share with your peers? Is there any specific topic that you would like to address?

On Tuesday 17th, from 14:00 to 15:00, you will have the opportunity to do so. The Open Space is a segment in which the institutions or participants can propose topics to be addressed in parallel tables and invite others to the discussion.

If you would like to register a topic in advance for one of the tables, please contact María José Gutiérrez: Please note that it is not necessary to do so in advance. The tables will be available to open topics of interest that arise during conversations with the other participants.

The organization of the event will provide lunch and coffee breaks on the 16th and 17th, and coffee break in the morning of the 18th. The LEDS LAC workshop will end on the 18th at noon. Participants who wish to stay in the Latin Carbon must register in this link.

  • You must fulfill all the documentation required by the Mexican embassy or consulate in the Country of application.
  • The applicant is the only responsible to fulfill the documentations and meet the proper procedures before the Mexican authorities.
  • Once you have fulfilled the documentation, you have to schedule an appointment at a Mexican embassy or consulate.
  • The migration law, does not allow to issue any visa at entrance points in Mexico. You must have the proper documentation when arriving the country.
  • Migratory authorities may perform an interview, regarding the reasons for the travel and any other detail considered relevant.

We strongly urge you to review the procedures to which you may be subject to guarantee your entry into the country, sufficiently in advance, with the nearest Mexican consulate. 

Passport: Each participant must have a valid passport, and with a validity of not less than six months (180 days).

1) Taxi from airport to hotel

The average distance between the International Airport in Mexico City (AICM) to the Historical Center (where the venue is located) is 10km (6.2 miles). It is highly recommended that you use an authorized taxi service. There are plenty companies inside the airport, with visible or established fees. Fees in Mexican pesos are displayed below. Fees in USD are approximated (18 MXN for each dollar), they may vary according to the exchange rate.

UBER App is also another option, and it can be used within the AICM facilities.

2) Public transportation


The subway network covers almost the whole of Mexico City. It costs MXN $5.00 a trip. The service starts at 5:00 hrs. and ends at 24:00 hrs. from Monday to Friday; From 6:00 to 24:00 hrs. on Saturday and from 7:00 to 24:00 hrs. on Sunday and Holidays.

Note: There are rush hours in the service, between 7:00 and 9:00 hrs. and between 18:00 and 21:00 hrs. We recommend to avoid them.

There are 6 lines that also cover the main areas in the City. It costs MXN $6.00 a trip, but you need a card to access the service, you can buy and recharge it in the stations; you also can use this card in the subway system. Machines do not return any cash, you have to provide the exact amount.

Information about Mexico

1) Weather

The climate is temperate (mild) throughout the year. The average temperature is 20°C (68°F). However, in recent months there have been heavy rains in the city, so it is highly recommended to take additional precautions in case of rain.

2) Time zone: The time zone for Mexico is: UTC / GMT -6 hrs.

3) Currency: The national currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN), the exchange rate oscillates between MXN $17.50 and $18.00 for each dollar; it is recommended that you exchange in advance your money, or do it at airport, for banks in Mexico do not have this service. The majority of establishments accept credit cards, VISA or MASTER CARD, and some others also accept American Express, but not all of them. However, most small business establishments, accept only cash.

4) ID: In accordance with law, it is necessary to always carry an official and current ID, such as Passport or National ID.

5) Banks. There are many Banks and bank cashiers in the city and near the venue. Most important Banks in Mexico:

8) Electricity: The voltage in Mexico is 110-120 V 60Hz.

9) Security: The central area of the city (which is the area of the Hilton Reforma) is guarded by the City security forces 24 hrs., due to its touristic importance, and also because the City Government is located there. Also, there are many commercial, artistic and cultural establishments all around the area, with very flexible service hours.
